What Is an AI BDC? A Guide for Dealerships

· Relay BDC team

The short answer

An AI BDC is software that answers your dealership's leads the way a business development center would: it replies in minutes, day or night, carries on the conversation by text, web chat, email or phone, asks what the customer is looking for, recommends vehicles from your inventory, books the appointment, and brings in a person when the conversation needs one.

The point isn't to remove people. It's that every lead gets a quick, useful first reply, including the ones that arrive at 10pm or on a busy Saturday, and your team spends its time on the customers most likely to buy.

Why speed matters

Online shoppers contact several dealers at once and tend to go with whoever answers first. Research on online leads found that answering within an hour made reaching and qualifying a lead far more likely than answering later, and that many companies took a day or more to reply.

AI BDC, chatbot or AI receptionist?

BDC (business development center)
The people at a dealership who answer internet leads and phone calls, follow up, and set appointments for sales and service.
AI BDC
Software that does the first part of that job itself: it answers leads in conversation on text, chat, email or the phone, asks qualifying questions, books appointments, and hands the conversation to a person when it should.
Chatbot
A website widget that follows a fixed script or answers from a FAQ. It usually can't book an appointment in your systems or follow up by text.
AI receptionist
Answers the phone, routes the call, and may take a message or book a slot. Usually phone-only.
Handoff (escalation)
When the AI stops and passes the conversation to a person, ideally with a summary so the customer doesn't repeat themselves.
Shadow mode
A pilot setting where the AI drafts replies and your team decides what to send.

What a good AI BDC does

  • Knows when to stop. When it isn't sure, or a customer asks for a person or a final price, it hands off instead of guessing.
  • Hands off well. The right person gets the conversation with a summary. See how Miles hands off.
  • Books where your team works. Appointments should reach your CRM, not only the vendor's app.
  • Follows the rules. Texting consent, STOP and quiet hours, and unsubscribe links on marketing email.
  • Lets you start safely. A pilot where your team approves every reply before the AI answers on its own.

Choosing one

Every demo looks good on a friendly lead. The AI BDC vendor scorecard lists the questions to ask about the harder cases, with Relay BDC's own answers alongside, and what Miles reports shows how you'd measure the results.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI BDC replace the BDC team?
It changes their work. The AI takes the first reply on every lead, at any hour; your team takes the conversations it hands off, the calls, and the customers who are ready to buy.
What's the difference between an AI BDC and a chatbot?
A chatbot answers questions on your website. An AI BDC holds a conversation across text, chat, email and phone, qualifies the customer, books the appointment and follows up.
How do I compare AI BDC vendors?
Ask what happens when the AI isn't sure, where its bookings land, who gets the handoff, how it records consent, and whether you can pilot it with your team approving every reply. Our vendor scorecard lists the questions.
